This online class will consist of an introductory session followed by a week of independent practice and close with an observation and conversation session.
We will turn our attention through drawing towards withering and budding phenomena in plants.
Drawing from observation is an opportunity to characterize a phenomenon without words; the words can grow out of the encounter. It is useful to approach drawing as a conversation, in which we quiet ourselves and allow the observed phenomena to speak through the drawing. This course will be an invitation to observe these phenomena of growth and withering attentively.
Growing and dying are processes that reveal themselves over time. One organism that manifests these processes in a varied, beautiful, and complex way is the plant. In sprouting, in the unfolding of sprouts, new leaves, and blossoms, we see a movement towards growth and life. The budding flower grows towards openness in a kind of celebratory high-point of the whole plant's development; at some point, it turns towards withering again, letting go, dying - a surrender which makes space for the next step.
In the activity of drawing, we can document a moment in time; if we draw the same seedling, bud, growing leaf, or flower over a few days, we can become aware of subtle processes that otherwise may remain hidden from us. We can experience not just that the plant is growing/dying but follow how this is happening; we can participate in a specific aspect of this process.
The class will be accessible to all who are willing to dedicate about 15 minutes of independent work each day for a week to the practice.
More details concerning materials and preparation forthcoming.
